Digital Storytelling Workshop 2018

For the duration of 3 days, PIFF’19 conducted the Digital Storytelling Workshop, encouraging 30 aspiring filmmakers and media students alike from universities such as Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi School of Arts, Szabist, Iqra University, Habib University, Karachi University and NAPA. Selecting attendees on a merit basis, students were trained on the basic principles of filmmaking, writing, editing and directing whilst interacting with professionals from the industry.

Screenwriting with Ashwini Malik

KFS held a workshop focused on screenplay writing with acclaimed script-writing expert, Mr. Ashwini Malik from Mumbai. The workshop consisted of 2 modules, one being for young writers in the making and would-be filmmakers; and the second for more experienced writers and directors in the industry. The former was attended by 25 students from across Karachi while the latter had 22 professionals, mostly women, including attendees from HUM TV, ARY Digital, GEO and Express TV.

SEMINARS

Film Diplomacy & Cross Border Collaboration

This panel discussion boasted a diverse audience from across the border, discussing future collaborative incentives, as well as international relations in the film world. With panelists such as Asif Noorani, Asim Raza, Nandita Das, Sajal Ali, Harsh Narayyan and Rashid Khwaja.

 

Innovation on Screen: Digital Dimensions

Contemporary culture plays a huge part in what is trending, popular or the talk of the town. In this seminar, panelists such as Mooroo, Tazeen Hussain, Abrar Ali Khan, Farees Shah and Faizan Syed were all present to discuss digital portals and new technologies in media, leading to innovation on screens and advancements in the industry.

 

Genre Busters

A discussion to clear the air on categories, distinctions, labels and more, a vast panelist board attended this interactive seminar, busting the myths surrounding genres. From our very own Mehreen Jabbar, Hashim Raza, Atiqa Odho, Asma Nabil, and Adnan Sarwar, to India’s Vinay Pathak, Nandita Das, Rajmouli and Naga Sobhanadri Yarlagadda.

 

Films For Change: Socially Motivated Content in the South Asian Film Industry

Which films challenged or questioned societal norms, bringing about a difference? In this seminar, films which prompted some type of change, realisation or self-reflection in South Asia, were brought into question. With the presence of KFS President Sultana Siddiqui, the late Haseena Moin, Jami, Hareem Farooq, Rashid Sami, Vishal Bhardwaj, Nishtha Jain and Subhash Kapoor.

 

The Future of Music & Lyrics: How Important is Music in Subcontinental Cinema?

Not only is music a vital part of cinema, but it can make or break a film, to a great extent. Answering the question posed as to why music is essential in subcontinental cinema, be it Lollywood or Bollywood, the panelists included experts in the field, such as Asif Noorani, Dr. Omer Adil, Vishal and Rekha Bhardwaj, Sultan Arshad, Arshad Mehmood and Izzat Majeed.

 

Women in Film – A Celebration

A one day event held on International Women’s Day 2018, the seminar was anchored by Sania Saeed, with actors, directors, producers and esteemed members of the media fraternity in attendance. Aiming to acknowledge and appreciate the contribution of women in the Pakistani film industry the interactive session included celebrities such as the late Haseena Moin, Reema Khan, Samina Peerzada, Bushra Ansari, Rubina Ashraf, Momina Duraid and Fiza Ali participating in panel discussions.

SCREENINGS

After selecting 6 different venues primarily focusing on media institutes as well as marginalized communities, PIFF implemented a mobile screening initiative, consisting of local and international films across Karachi which were made available for a variety of audiences. From Community Hall, Malir, screenings took place at Iqra University Auditorium, Murshid Auditorium, Moach Goth, Hub, and more.
